I don’t understand Éowyn’s massive appreal to the audience.

She’s the only female character with any development. (If we’re talking books, for named female characters, we have…what? Goldberry, Rosie Cotton, Lobelia Sackville-Baggins, Galadriel, Arwen, and Eowyn, where Arwen is actually mostly in an appendix? If movies, then cut Goldberry and Lobelia only has a cameo.) 

Of those characters, she has the most appeal (at least to me): she’s resilient under really bad circumstances, kills the Witch King, believes in Merry enough to take him along, and fights out of a mixture of frustration at being limited in her role, despair and desire to follow Aragorn (which isn’t particularly an appealing quality, granted), and desire to fight for her people. And she has some of the best lines (“I fear neither death nor pain.” “What do you fear?” “A cage, to be held behind bars until use and old age accept them…”)  

Oh Jesus fuck. She’s the ONLY strong female character in the whole series. Well, other than Galadriel, who, if you read the Silmarillion, is a power hungry bitch, lol.
